Q&A: Katherine Kovacic, Author of ‘No Good Deed’
What inspired you to write ‘No Good Deed’?
The idea for ‘No Good Deed’ came from my interest in stories about people who stand up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. I wanted to explore the motivations behind acts of courage and the personal costs that can come with them. Reading about historical figures who risked everything to help others made me wonder how ordinary people might respond in similar situations today.

How did you approach researching the book?
Research was a crucial part of the process. I spent a lot of time reading historical accounts, biographies, and news articles about individuals who performed acts of bravery. I also spoke with experts in ethics and psychology to better understand the mindset of someone who chooses to intervene in dangerous circumstances. This helped me create authentic characters and realistic scenarios.
Were there any challenges you faced during the writing process?
One of the main challenges was balancing fact and fiction. I wanted the story to be grounded in reality, but I also needed to craft a compelling narrative. It was sometimes difficult to decide how much creative license to take without losing the essence of the real-life events that inspired the book. Additionally, writing about morally complex situations required careful thought to avoid oversimplifying the issues.
What do you hope readers take away from the novel?
I hope readers finish the book feeling inspired to consider their own values and the impact of their actions. The story is ultimately about the power of individual choices and the ripple effects they can have on others. If it encourages people to reflect on what they would do in a similar situation, I’ll feel I’ve accomplished something meaningful.
Can you share a favorite moment or scene from the book?
There’s a scene where the main character faces a pivotal decision that will change the course of their life. Writing that moment was both challenging and rewarding, as it encapsulates the themes of courage and sacrifice that run throughout the novel. It’s a turning point that I hope resonates with readers as much as it did with me while writing it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m currently working on a new project that delves into the world of art crime, which is another area I find fascinating. While it’s quite different from ‘No Good Deed,’ it still explores questions of morality and justice. I’m excited to see where this next story takes me and to share it with readers in the future.
