Betty Bromage, who turns 100 this year, completed her daring feat by standing atop a biplane as it looped through the air, breaking the previous record set by 93-year-old Patricia Baker in March.
Taking to the Skies
Betty, from Cheltenham, UK, took on the challenge at Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire. She was securely strapped to the top of a Boeing Stearman biplane, which soared to 700 feet and reached speeds of up to 110 mph.
Despite the wind and the rush of adrenaline, Betty described the experience as “exhilarating” and said she was thrilled to have achieved something so unique at her age.
Why She Did It
Betty’s wing-walk was not just for the thrill. She undertook the flight to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, a cause close to her heart. Over the past decade, she has raised more than £30,000 for charity through a series of adventurous stunts, including previous wing-walks, abseiling, and ziplining.
- Wing-walking at 90, 91, 93, and now 99
- Abseiling down a 100-foot tower
- Braving a 250-meter zipline
Setting a New World Record
Guinness World Records confirmed Betty’s achievement, officially recognizing her as the oldest person ever to wing-walk. The previous record holder, Patricia Baker, had only recently set the benchmark at 93 years old.
Betty said, “I never imagined I’d be setting world records at my age. I just want to show people that you’re never too old to try something new.”
Inspiring Others
Betty hopes her accomplishment will encourage others, regardless of age, to pursue their dreams and support causes they care about. She believes that staying active and adventurous is key to a long and fulfilling life.
