The Fort Collins Police Services shared the story on their official Facebook page, posting a photo of the handwritten note. In her message, the girl explained that she was sorry for taking the rock and wanted to return it, along with a dollar to make up for her mistake.
The note read: “To the police officer, I am sorry that I stole the rock from your garden. Here is a dollar to pay for it. Sincerely, a very sorry girl.”
Fort Collins Police Services praised the girl’s honesty and integrity, saying, “We are so proud of this young community member for doing the right thing, even when it was hard.” The department also encouraged others to follow her example by making amends when mistakes happen.
