A good deal for a good deed
When shoppers at a local grocery store in the city’s west end reach the checkout, they’re greeted with an opportunity to help those in need—and get a little something in return.

Supporting the community
For the past month, the store has been running a campaign that encourages customers to donate to the local food bank. Anyone who contributes at least $5 at the register receives a coupon for 10% off their next purchase.
Store manager Lisa Grant says the initiative has been well received. “People are eager to help, and the discount is a nice way to say thank you,” she explains. “It’s been wonderful to see so many customers participate.”
How it works
- At checkout, shoppers are asked if they’d like to donate $5 or more to the food bank.
- Those who donate receive a coupon valid for 10% off their next visit.
- All donations go directly to the local food bank, which supports families in the area.
The campaign has already raised over $3,000, with donations continuing to come in daily. The food bank’s director, Mark Evans, says the support is making a real difference. “We’re able to provide more fresh produce and pantry staples to families who need it most,” he shares.
Customers respond
Many shoppers appreciate the chance to give back. “It’s a simple way to help, and the discount is a bonus,” says regular customer Sarah Lee. “I hope more stores do things like this.”
Others agree that the program benefits everyone involved. “It’s a win-win,” says shopper David Chen. “You help your neighbors and save a little on your groceries.”
Looking ahead
The store plans to continue the campaign through the end of the month and is considering similar initiatives in the future. Grant says the response has inspired the team to look for more ways to support the community.
“We’re grateful for our customers’ generosity,” she says. “Together, we can make a real impact.”
