Humanity’s 3rd Visit to Mercury Kicks Off with the Successful Arrival of BepiColombo Mission
The BepiColombo spacecraft has reached Mercury, marking the third time humans have sent a probe to study the innermost planet of our solar system. This milestone was achieved after a journey spanning over three years, with the spacecraft now poised to begin its detailed exploration of Mercury’s surface and environment.

A Collaborative Effort in Space Exploration
BepiColombo is a joint mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Launched in October 2018, the spacecraft was designed to investigate Mercury’s unique characteristics, including its magnetic field, geology, and exosphere. The mission’s arrival is a testament to international cooperation in advancing planetary science.
Journey to the Solar System’s Smallest Planet
Reaching Mercury is a significant challenge due to the planet’s proximity to the Sun and the intense gravitational forces involved. BepiColombo’s voyage included a series of complex maneuvers, utilizing flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury itself to gradually slow down and align with Mercury’s orbit. Scientific Goals and Instruments
BepiColombo is equipped with two orbiters: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) from ESA and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), also known as Mio, from JAXA. Together, these orbiters will conduct a comprehensive study of Mercury’s surface, magnetic field, and thin atmosphere. The mission aims to answer longstanding questions about the planet’s formation and its extreme environment.
