Transition to Digital Payment Platform
During a recent meeting, the commission discussed the implementation of an online portal designed to make it easier for hotels, motels, and short-term rental operators to submit their monthly transient room taxes. The move is expected to streamline the process for both the commission and local businesses.
Executive Director Ann Stewart explained that the new system will allow property owners to pay taxes electronically, reducing paperwork and minimizing the risk of late or missed payments. “We believe this will be a more efficient way for everyone involved,” Stewart said.
Benefits for Local Businesses
Several commission members noted that the online payment option could be particularly helpful for small business owners and those managing short-term rentals, such as Airbnb or VRBO properties. By making the process more accessible, the commission hopes to increase compliance and ensure that all eligible properties are contributing their fair share.
- Convenient payment options
- Reduced administrative burden
- Improved record-keeping
Addressing Past Collection Challenges
Historically, collecting the transient room tax has posed challenges, especially from property owners unfamiliar with the process or those who operate outside traditional hotel and motel structures. The commission has worked to educate these owners, but tracking down payments has remained time-consuming.
“We’ve had to spend a lot of time following up with people,” Stewart said. “With this new system, we’re hopeful that more people will pay on time and that we’ll have fewer delinquencies.”
Looking Ahead
The commission plans to launch the online payment portal in the coming months and will provide instructions and support for property owners as they transition to the new system. Stewart emphasized that the goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible, encouraging greater participation and timely payments.
